The NC Pre-Kindergarten Program provides high-quality educational experiences for eligible four year-olds to better prepare them for kindergarten. Children served by NC Pre-K attend a full school day (6-1/2 hours), full school year program (up to 10 months) and may be served in classrooms in the public schools, private child care programs or Head Start.
The NC Pre-K Program is built upon the belief that to be successful academically in school, children need to be prepared in all five of the developmental domains critical to children's overall well-being and success in reading and math. These five domains are: - Approaches to play and learning;
- Emotional & social development;
- Health & physical development;
- Language development & communication;
- Cognitive Development.
The program targets children who: - Turn four years of age by August 31
- Will be entering kindergarten the following school year
- And who have one or more of the following:
- Low family income
- Identified disability
- Limited English proficiency
- Chronic health condition
- Developmental delay
- Educational need identified by an Individualized Education Plan
